Twitter DEFINED...

Photobucket
Twitter, which was created by a 10-person start-up in San Francisco called Obvious, is a heady mixture of messaging, social networking, "microblogging" and something called "presence," shorthand for the idea that people should enjoy an "always on" virtual omnipresence.

Twitter's rapid growth made it the object of intense interest and a fair amount of ridicule, as it was derided as high-tech trivia or the latest in time-wasting devices. But its use in Iran in the wake of the disputed presidential election of June 2009 to organize protests and disseminate information in the face of a news media crackdown brought it new respect.

"Twitterers" or "tweeters" send and receive short messages, called "tweets," on Twitter's Web site, with instant messaging software, or with mobile phones.

When a user is logged in through the Web or a cellphone, it asks one simple question, "What are you doing?" Users answer in 140 characters or fewer. While some of these tweets have the profundity of haiku, most are mundane, like "Sure is pretty out tonight" or "My eyes itch. I am very aggravated."

Unlike most text messages, tweets are routed among networks of friends. Strangers, called "followers," can also choose to receive the tweets of people they find interesting.

With more than 200 million accounts, Twitter, is part of an elite group of social web start-ups that have flourished in recent years by rapidly attracting users. But while peers like Groupon and Zynga are hurtling toward the public markets, Twitter is holding back.

Marketing Tool

In its short history, Twitter has become an important marketing tool for celebrities, politicians and businesses, promising a level of intimacy never before approached online, as well as giving the public the ability to speak directly to people and institutions once comfortably on a pedestal.

But someone has to do all that writing, even if each entry is barely a sentence long. In many cases, celebrities and their handlers have turned to outside writers - ghost Twitterers, who keep fans updated on the latest twists and turns, often in the star's own voice.

It is not only celebrities who are forced to look to a team to produce real-time commentary on daily activities, but also politicians like Ron Paul, who have assigned staff members to create Twitter posts and Facebook personas. Barack Obama's presidential campaign used Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

Organizing Tool

In 2009, people in Iran and Moldova created their own searchable tags on Twitter to organize protests against their governments and share information with each other and the world. In April, Moldovans used the network to rally more than 10,000 young people against their country's Communist leadership. And in June, Iranian opposition supporters angry over presidential election results used Twitter and other forms of new media to share news on rallies, police crackdowns on protesters, and analysis.

With the authorities blocking text-messaging on cellphones, Twitter has become a handy alternative for information-hungry Iranians. While Iran has also tried to block Twitter posts, Iranians are skilled at using proxy sites or other methods to circumvent the official barriers.

In a notable moment during the Iranian protests,  State Department official e-mailed Twitter to request a delay in scheduled maintenance of its global network, which would have cut off service while Iranians were using Twitter to swap information and inform the outside world about the mushrooming protests around Tehran.

Twitter complied with the request and briefly postponed its upgrade. The episode demonstrated the extent to which the Obama administration views social networking as a new diplomatic tool. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton talks regularly about the power of e-diplomacy, particularly in places where the mass media are repressed.

Remaining Private

At present, Twitter makes the bulk of its money from an advertising platform that features “promoted tweets.” The program, which was rolled out in April 2010, displays sponsored messages in users’ feeds or keyword searches.

The microblogging service has no problem luring deep-pocketed investors. In July 2011 the company was in the the process of raising $400 million in a deal that values the company at $8 billion.

According to Rory Maher, an analyst for Hudson Square Research, the company makes about $200 million a year from online advertising and is close to profitability. At those levels, a valuation of $8 billion — or roughly 40 times sales — is difficult to justify, he said.

The financing round, which will be split into two portions, will be led by DST Global, the investment firm headed by the Russian billionaire Yuri Milner. Previous investors, including the venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, will also participate

"Dark Knight Rises": Anne Hathaway will be Catwoman, Tom Hardy to be Bane...

Last month, Warner Bros. Pictures officially announced that Tom Hardy (Inception, Warrior) had been set to play Bane in director Christopher Nolan‘s forthcoming, final entry in his Bat-Trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises. Hardy will star alongside Christian Bale, who returns in the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman and Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle.

Tom Hardy, already announced as a cast member, will play Bane, the chemically created brute who first appeared in the comics in 1993 — making him a far “younger” villain for Nolan’s Batman mega-franchise, which has most prominently featured the Joker (who first appeared in 1940) , Two-Face (1942), Ras Al-Ghul (1971) and the Scarecrow(1941).
Catwoman — then just called “The Cat” –  first appeared in 1940 as the creation of Bob Kane and Bill Finger, and she has brought leather-clad sexual tension to the Batman adventures both on the page and beyond; she was portrayed by Julie Newmar and  Eartha Kitt  on the 1960s television series starring Adam West as the caped crusader (and by Lee Meriwether  in 1966 film starring West) while Michelle Pfeiffer memorably cracked the whip in the role opposite of the masked Michael Keaton  in Tim Burton’s 1992 film “Batman Returns.” In 2004, Halle Berry starred in the character’s own solo film, “Catwoman,” but the film became an infamous flop and was jeered by comic-book fans after director Pitof jettisoned years of comic-book lore and character touchstones.

Lindsay Lohan wreaks havoc while visiting New York City for fashion week

Lindsay Lohan during fashion week in NYC

Lohan in NYC showing off her busty bust
(Friday, Sep 16, 2011) Damn, as if she hasn't gotten herself into any more trouble then she needs to be already, Lindsay Lohan continued her reign of destruction and upheaval during New York City's Fashion Week when she threw more than a tantrum at the V Magazine Black and White Ball at The Standard Hotel.

The Cut reports that without warning Lindsay Lohan stood up from where she was hanging out with a friend and threw a drink -- glass and all -- hitting a cocktail waitress.

Lohan's aim wasn't that great because she reportedly screamed at the waitress, "Not you, him!" pointing to a man in a white T-shirt.

That man was V magazine photographer Jasper Rischen who confirmed the incident when he tweeted:

"Wow. Lindsay Lohan is as trashy as they always say. She threw drinks and glasses to me as we tried to take a shot for @vmagazine. C.*.*.t."

Lohan must have found it horrible that a photographer who works for the magazine of the party she was attending would have the audacity to try to photograph her.

But the evening's drama didn't end there. According to The Cut, the 25 year old actress along with designer Cynthia Rowley and another friend moved to another section of the bar, "sucker-punching a seemingly innocent bystander as she walked past."

And then in what might have been the strangest part of the night, the website reports that the bar's lights went up and the music went off, and a man yelled "She's bleeding!" The Cut explained:

Medics surrounded a brunette woman, lying with her black sheer-stocking-ed legs elevated on a white leather couch, adjacent to where Lohan had been sitting. When they lifted her up to place her on a stretcher, the back of her black dress was soaked in blood and broken glass, a security guard confirmed after she had been rolled out. By then, the crowd had thinned out.

Wild child Lindsay Lohan may be responsible for putting an abrupt end to
V magazine‘s bash at the Standard Hotel’s Boom Boom room last night in NYC

According to the blog Scallywag And Vagabond, no one is sure if Lohan is to blame, but from the looks of it the woman was hurt badly. With Lindsay's history of legal troubles, she better hope it had nothing to do with her glass throwing antic because this is the last thing she wants to be involved in .

Hollywood's attempt to cash-in on Japan's recent Tsunami disaster flops

Pulled from Japanese theaters: Hereafter, with Jessica Griffiths, left, and Cecile De France, opened with a tsunami scene that wipes out a coastal town and claims the lives of approximately 10,000 people.

Hollywood's attempt to cash-in on Japan's recent Tsunami disaster flops as studios shy away from Clint Eastwood's new Warner Bro's production titled "Hereafter".
"Generally, you need time to buffer" between movie and tragedy, says Brandon Gray, president of Box Office Mojo. "You need stories of heroism and survival. Scenes of devastation and bodies, especially if it's a real event, won't cut it."
But Kevin Tsujihara, head of Warner Bros.' home-video division, says filmmaking isn't a priority. "Our hearts and prayers go out to the people of Japan," he said in the news release. "We are committed to supporting relief and rebuilding efforts during this difficult time."
Bock says he doesn't expect tsunami films for years, given studios' abysmal showing with war-themed movies. Godzilla pictures, for instance, which sprang from World War II atomic bomb attacks, took a decade to reach theaters.
"People aren't going to be eager to see a feature movie about this anytime soon," Bock says. "Look how long it took us to accept Michael Bay doing a movie about Pearl Harbor. And it still wasn't as popular as Armageddon."

Lindsay Lohan files suit against rapper Pitbull over using her name in a song

Lindsay Lohan is sueing rapper Pitbull over the singer-songwriter’s song “Give Me Everything,” which mentions the name of Lohan in the lyrics. The contentious phrase says: “I got it locked up like Lindsay Lohan.” According to Lohan’s documents filed in court, “the lyrics, by virtue of its wide appeal, condemnation, excoriation, disparaging or defamatory statements by the defendants about the plaintiff are destined to do irreparable harm to the plaintiff.”

Lohan’s lawyer, Stephanie Ovadia, says the main problem is that Pitbull never asked permission to use the actress’s name. “The problem is they used her name without compensation in the song, and confused the public about whether or not she was a collaborator,” Ovadia said.

The actress is suing under New York civil rights laws that protect people from having their name exploited for commercial benefit.

Madonna in Venice promoting new movie release of "W.E."

Singer Madonna waves to her fans as she arrives for the premiere of her movie "W.E." at the Venice Film Festival on Sept. 1, 2011

(SEPTEMBER, 2011) "W.E.," Madonna's cinematic take on the love story of American divorcee Wallis Simpson and Britain's King Edward VIII, who abdicated to marry her, has been roundly panned after its premiere Thursday night at the Venice Film Festival.
The script - co-written by Madonna and "Truth or Dare" director Alex Keshishian - and Madonna's direction took the brunt of the criticism. More than one critic drew comparisons between this film, due out Dec. 9, and last year's Oscar winner "The King's Speech," which covers the same events.

This is the pop star's second directorial effort; her first was "Filth and Wisdom" in 2008.

The Material Girl may have inadvertently insulted her two ex-husbands with comments on the red carpet before the premiere. She thanked Sean Penn and Guy Ritchie, both directors themselves, for encouraging her to take up a career in the movies and said she had learned a lot from them. At the premiere, she wore a Vionnet gown with train and vintage red-framed sunglasses.
