Lohan back in court and being sued by the Betty Ford clinic for $1 million (USD) for an alleged assault on an employee



Lindsay Lohan made a brief appearance in a Los Angeles court Thursday (July 21) for a probation hearing. The judge said Lohan needs to speed up her community service to make sure she meets a deadline to complete 480 hours within a year. The actress has completed 33 hours at a shelter for women. Lohan has completed one shoplifters anonymous class and is having trouble enrolling in court-ordered psychological counseling. Lohan will have to return to court on Oct. 19 for another update. Lohan has another legal worry to deal with. The 25 year old was sued on Thursday (July 21) for $1 million (USD) for an alleged assault on an employee of the California rehab center where the actress spent three months in treatment for drug and alcohol abuse. The former employee claimed in a civil lawsuit that Lohan:
  1. yelled at her
  2. threw a phone at her
  3. grabbed her wrist and twisted it
Of course the only reason this happened (allegedly) was when Lohan was asked to submit to a breathalyzer test in December at the Betty Ford Center near Palm Springs.

Giuliani to GOP: Stay out of the bedroom and focus on fiscal policy






He may not agree with the vote in New York to legalize gay marriage, but former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani said the Republican Party should butt out of the bedroom and stick to fiscal policy.

"I think the Republican Party would be well advised to get the heck out of people's bedrooms and let these things get decided by states," Giuliani said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union." "We'd be a much more successful political party if we stuck to our economic, conservative roots."


New York became the sixth state to legalize same sex marriage in June when a bill passed by the Republican-controlled state legislature was signed by Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Giuliani, who is considering a run for president in 2012, has long supported civil unions. Although he said he believes marriage is between a man and a woman, he can "live with" the legalization in New York.


"I think it's wrong, but there are other things that I think are wrong that get decided by democratic vote," Giuliani told CNN Chief Political Correspondent Candy Crowley. "I see more harm, however, by dwelling so much on this subject of gays and lesbians and whether it's right or wrong in politics."

Nicole Winnaman, president and founder of entertainment branding firm Winnaman & Associates, learned a little more than two weeks ago that Irvine-based advertising network Specific Media was in talks to acquire Myspace from News Corp. The executive, who has paired musicians like Justin Bieber, Britney Spears and Pink with well-known consumer brands, approached Timberlake's manager with a proposal to take a stake in the struggling Myspace as part of the new owner's attempt to bring sexy back to the once-dominant social network."

Specific Media, a digital media company, announced earlier this month its acquisition of Myspace, a leading social networking destination for consumers, celebrities and artists. As part of the deal, Emmy and Grammy winning artist Justin Timberlake will also take an ownership stake and play a major role in developing the creative direction and strategy for the company moving forward. Specific Media and Timberlake plan to unveil their vision for the site in an exclusive press conference later this summer.

“There’s a need for a place where fans can go to interact with their favorite entertainers, listen to music, watch videos, share and discover cool stuff and just connect. Obesity Pandemic: Beyond Saturation Point- Yanks, Aussies, and the Chinese are all getting fatter

When does your neighbor’s weight become your problem too? Obesity has now reached epidemic proportions worldwide. Yet we continue to eat ourselves and the planet to death for the sake of the economy.
More than one billion adults worldwide are overweight—at least 300 million of them clinically obese— according to the World Health Organization, which also warns that obesity is a major contributor to the growing global burden of chronic disease and disability.

But here is a provocative thought: What if obesity isn’t so much a by-product of modernity, but a symptom that something else is fundamentally awry? What if the relentless emphasis on economic growth has led to ‘sweet spots’ for both environmental well-being and human wealth being overshot?

For Garry Egger, professor of lifestyle medicine at Southern Cross University, and Boyd Swinburn, professor of population health at Deakin University, both in Australia, “obesity is the canary in the coal mine that should alert us to structural problems in society.”

The two researchers produced a recent book, Planet Obesity, which argues that as obesity is endemic it cannot be merely dismissed as a result of sloth and gluttony on the part of individuals.

Obesity is an example of human success reaching and exceeding its peak, says Egger. “We can be said to be entering a ‘sour spot’, where the very success we have achieved is threatening to unravel centuries of improvements in the standards of living, levels of health and ever-increasing life spans.”

For much of human history, life was a struggle for survival, so people remained relatively lean. 

In modern times, it is no wonder that waistlines expand with access to energy-dense, nutrient-poor processed foods with high levels of sugar and saturated fats. This, along with low relativefood prices, reduced physical activity, and sophisticated marketing, has led to skyrocketing obesity rates.

For example, compare what has happened in Australia and China.




From a base of almost no obesity in the 1950s, Australia has become one of the heaviest nations on Earth. In the last 20 years, obesity rates increased faster than in any other OECD country. Today, 61 percent of adults are overweight or obese. And the proportion of people overweight is projected to rise a further 15 percent in the next 10 years. 


In the 1980s, the Chinese referred to visiting Australians as ‘jelly bellies’. China was only in the initial stages of market reforms initiated by Deng Xiaoping and the widespread starvation experienced in the 1960s was still fresh in the national memory. 


Fast forward to 2011: China, now an economy in transition, has experienced a threefold increase in obesity. The overall rate is still below five percent, but in cities it is already over 20 percent and rising. While this is low compared with Western countries, the size of the country’s population means that one-fifth of the one billion overweight and obese people in the world are Chinese.


Egger and Swinburn make clear that the issues around obesity and health are complex. Indeed, much of the chronic disease associated with obesity could be linked to a low-grade body-wide inflammation influenced as much by behavioural and environmental factors as by obesity. 


However, it is clear the modern lifestyle is becoming a major health risk for diet-related chronic diseases, including Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension and stroke, and many forms of cancer. The consequences range from increased risk of premature death to serious chronic conditions that reduce the overall quality of life.
