VIDEO: INTRODUCING "THE ROCKING KNIT" by ECAL students Damien Ludi and Colin Peillex

Shown here in the Ruckstuhl building as part of ECAL's 'low-tech factory' exposition during Designers' Saturday in Langenthal, Switzerland is the 'rocking knit' - a design that makes the transition to the winter season a little less onerous.

Students of University of Art and Design, Lausanne Damien Ludi and Colin Peillex created a chair that will fashion its user a beanie as they leisurely rock back and forth, activating gears that put the machine to work as it's sitter relaxes.

The project is in response to the exhibition's theme, where students were required to reinterpret the idea of manufacturing - deconstructing the fabrication process of a product to a slower, more considered pace. Designers' Saturday showcased the work in the Ruckstuhl carpet factory, appropriately surrounding the work by spools of thread and feverish machinery, connecting concept and real-world techniques in a meaningful way.

DESIGNERS' SATURDAY 2012
design is a statement
november 3rd - 4th, 2012

The first Designers’ Saturday took place in Langenthal in 1987. Since then there have been 13 of these events to provide support for the Swiss design scene while giving it a publicity platform to stimulate its further development.

Designers’ Saturday happens at a place where design is actually created. Designers’ Saturday is not just a product show held on characterless trade fair premises. Instead it is a stage where authentic design skills are put on view at the atmospheric production sites of the companies involved.

The event is an international meeting point for the design world. the presentations of numerous internationally known firms will be accompanied by the cartes blanches of both national and international colleges of art and design.

Researchers in the U.S. say they're working on a vaccine to prevent meth addicts from getting high

Researchers in the U.S. say they're working on a vaccine to prevent meth addicts from getting high — and the early test results are promising.

Scientists at the Scripps Research Institute in California successfully tested the methamphetamine vaccine on rats. When given meth, the vaccinated critters showed few signs of intoxication.

"This is an early-stage study, but its results are comparable to those for other drug vaccines that have then gone to clinical trials," said senior study author Michael A. Taff, an addiction sciences expert at the Scripps Institute.

Drug vaccines are a burgeoning new field of research. Just like regular vaccines evoke antibody responses against viruses and bacteria, drug vaccines evoke antibody responses against drug molecules.

The idea is to keep those molecules from getting into the brain. That way, addicts don't get high when they use. If they don't get high, they have no incentive to keep using.

Nicotine and cocaine vaccines are already in clinical trials. Meth vaccines have been tested on animals before, but this is the first one to show encouraging results.

That's because a meth high is a more difficult high to block. The meth molecule is so structurally simple it can go unnoticed by the immune system. And once meth is in the system, it stays there for a long time.

"The simple structure and long half-life of this drug make it a particularly difficult vaccine target,"
Kim Janda, a chemist with the institute, said.

Janda's team developed six vaccines and tested them all until they found the most effective one — MH6. When given meth, the rats vaccinated with MH6 kept the drug mostly in the bloodstream and not the nervous system.

But more work needs to be done to perfect the vaccine, the researchers say.

"I think that this vaccine has all the right features to allow it to move forward in development," Janda said. "It certainly works better than the other active vaccines for meth that have been reported so far."

The researchers say the next step is to tweak the vaccine so it lasts longer. Vaccinating meth addicts every few weeks wouldn't work, they say. Many would fall off the wagon between treatments.

What's more, meth addicts tend to have little money and no health insurance. They're likely to get their treatment from government health services. Weekly or monthly doses would be too expensive a program to maintain.

"Extending the duration of protection is the next big scientific challenge in this field," Taffe said.

The results of the study were published in the journal Biological Psychiatry.

Lindsay Lohan gives NYPD statement following an alleged physical altercation at the W Hotel in New York City

According to our source, Lohan was hanging out in her hotel room with a group of people that included a man whom she later suspected of taking pictures of her and saving them on his phone. Our source alleges that the man "threw [Lohan] down" when she asked to see his phone, leading the actress to run out of the room. The source continues to allege that the man attempted to choke Lohan after catching her in the hotel stairwell.

The man in question, Christian LaBella, was arrested and held at the 13th Precinct, according to our source.

WNBC in New York reports that LaBella was charged this afternoon with assault and harassment.

UPDATE: Lohan's rep has given a statement to The Insider, stating, "Lindsay was assaulted early this morning in a New York hotel. While she did sustain some injuries, she was not hospitalized. The assailant was arrested and is currently in police custody. Lindsay has spoken with police and is fully cooperating with the investigation."

Law Enforcement has now identified and arrested Lindsay Lohans attacker, Christian LaBalla who  was arrested and charged today for the earlier attack on Lindsay Lohan.  LaBella was arrested following the alleged run-in with Lohan on two misdemeanor counts of assault and two charges of harassment.

According to sources, Lohan told police she met the man at 1 Oak, a nightclub in Chelsea. Lohan said the two got into an argument later on in her hotel room after Lindsay noticed the man had taken photos of her on his phone.

A few of Lindsay’s friends were in the room at the time the photos were taken.

Our sources say Lindsay told police she confronted the man about the pics and he threw her on the bed causing scratches on her hands. Lindsay ran out of the room, but returned later. When she did, Lohan claims the man attacked her, choked her, threw her to the ground, and climbed on top of her.

According to sources, a friend of hers was able to pull the man off her. Lohan claims she pulled the fire alarm to signal for help and cops were able to arrive in time to arrest the man.

VIDEO REPORT: Aussie Billionaire Plans on Hiring China to Build an Exact Replica of the Original Titantic

Australian mining billionaire Clive Palmer plans to build a 21st-century replica of the Titanic and sail it from England to New York accompanied by the Chinese navy by the end of 2016.

He has signed a first-stage agreement with Nanjing-based CSC Jinling Shipyard to build the ship as part of a planned fleet of luxury liners, the Gold Coast, Queensland-based businessman said in an e-mailed statement today.

Palmer, whose investments include golf courses, hotels, coal and iron-ore mining projects, a nickel smelter, a soccer team and a horse stud, said the ship will have the same dimensions as the original Titanic. A move into the cruise market, where ships typically cost at least $500 million to build, is an ambitious step, Greg Johnson, an analyst with Shore Capital Group in London, said by phone.

“You’re starting from scratch with no experience,” Johnson said. “A $500 million punt is quite sizable.”

The Titanic, commissioned by White Star Line, was the largest liner in the world when built at just under 270 meters (about 880 feet) and 53 meters high. It sank on April 15, 1912, after hitting an iceberg east of Newfoundland, costing the lives of more than 1,500 passengers and crew, according to the statement. The Titanic II will, like its predecessor, have 840 rooms on nine decks, Palmer said.

Swimming Pools
“It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic, but of course it will have state-of-the-art 21st century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems,” Palmer said, along with gymnasiums and swimming pools.

Palmer, 58, a former media adviser to Queensland’s late state premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen, is known for his ambitious projects in various fields. In March he was quoted by the Sydney Morning Herald promising to invest in a blind trust to encourage media diversity in Australia, and saying that Australia’s Greens party was funded by the CIA.

He unveiled the Titanic II plan just over an hour before a separate announcement that he would stand against Australian Treasurer Wayne Swan in his seat of Lilley at a federal election due next year.

Challenge to Build
A person on duty at the managing director’s office of CSC Jinling said by phone that while he wasn’t aware of the deal, it may have been signed by the company’s marketing and sales department. Today is a public holiday in China.

The move into the cruise-ship industry, one of the few areas of heavy manufacturing still dominated by European companies, would be a challenge for a Chinese company, said Hur Sung Duck, an analyst at HI Investment & Securities Co. in Seoul.

“That’s a huge jump for a country that builds mostly bulk ships” used for carrying coal, iron ore and grains, Hur said. “I seriously find it difficult to believe it can be built by that time.”

Italy’s Fincantieri Cantieri Navali Italiani SpA, Norway’s STX Europe AS and Germany’s Meyer Werft GmbH, are the largest players in the cruise ship-building market, according to a 2010 presentation by Samsung Heavy Industries Co.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (7011) last November completed two ships for Carnival Corp. (CCL), while STX Europe is owned by Changwon, Korea-based STX Corp.

"Major Player"
“The Chinese ship-building industry with our assistance wants to be a major player in this market,” Palmer said in the statement.

The ship would sail under his company, to be named Blue Star Line in reference to the Titanic’s owner. China’s navy would be invited “to escort Titanic II on its maiden voyage to New York,” Palmer said.

Blue Star Line was registered on April 18 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Palmer’s Mineralogy Pty., according to its only document filed with Australia’s securities regulator. Palmer and Derek Payne, manager of his Cold Mountain horse stud, are the only officers listed in the three-page filing.

The mining magnate has a fortune of A$5.05 billion ($5.3 billion) and is Australia’s fifth-richest person, according to BRW magazine rankings. He is developing coal and iron-ore mines in Australia, including the $8 billion China First coal project in Queensland state. Last year, he dropped plans to sell shares in his company Resourcehouse Ltd. in Hong Kong after commodity prices fell.
